How odd

I can't picture Mr. Strauss saying "w00t! w00t!" -- but he has, on his blog.

Now, er... how would you pronounce that in South Africa, eh? (By the by, I have completely given up on trying not to say 'eh', at least not when I'm in Canada. My linguistic assimilation continues to the extent that I caught myself saying "PRO-gress" instead of "PRAH-gress" the other day. But I am convinced that I will never be able to think in Celsius degrees. I mean, zero for freezing, 100 for boiling? So confusing.

(Can you picture me saying "heh"?)

I just wish that one day the radio would give the degrees in Celcius. That way, when I hear they say that it's 5 degrees outside, I can be pleasantly surprised by a relatively balmy 40 F.

The "eh" is the easiest Canadianism to acquire and the hardest to get rid of. As for Celsius measurements, I now think in these terms rather thoroughly. Yet kilometres and litres still feel foreign, I must admit. Then again so do cups, pints, quarts, &c. I guess I never quite grasped the notion of measuring volume, period. :-)

I think the hardest Canadianism to get rid of is 'saourie' for the barbaric Midwestern 'sAHHHrie' (sorry). Canadian sorry just sounds more apologetic; the US version makes you sound petty and unforgiving.

Also, I've noticed that some Canadians pronounce 'kilometres' KI-lo-me-t@rs; I, and I think most Americans, would say k-LOM-e-t@rs (@ is the schwa or 'uh' sound). The Canadian pronunciation fits with the pronunciation of kilogram, kilojoule, etc., but it just sounds sing-songy and weird.
