This lovely site lists "liberal-unfriendly" places. I'm proud to see my hometown, Grand Rapids MI, has a spot
on the list. Readers are invited to leave comments on Just How Horrible the place is:
Grand Rapids certainly is one of the most opressive cities, from its embedded Calvinist Theology all the way down to its staunch anti gay attitude. Grand rapids not only lacks diversity, but it is a city without any real look for the future. It is truly the most conservative city outiside the Bible Belt. The sun shines but three days a year on Grand Rapids.....We Liberals Roam elsewhere!Makes me laugh... Posted by Tim at December 15, 2003 02:58 PM | TrackBack
that's partially true, isn't it? GR is not exactly a metropolis.
Posted by: Brian Dijkema at December 15, 2003 05:42 PMScore! Way to be good old GR! I'm not convinced on the "lacks diversity" part though! Ah, well. I guess the outsiders can think what they will! Good to know we're on the list. You make me laugh Tym!
Posted by: Mary at December 16, 2003 01:51 PM"lacks diversity" is the ultimate insult a liberal can bestowe in their own minds. Whether it's literally true or not doesn't matter, you are conservative, thus non-diverse.
Posted by: Ted at December 17, 2003 07:52 AM"Lacks diversity" is usually a code phrase meaning that the people at issue don't think as the user thinks they should. Which would appear to mean that in a truly diverse society everyone would think the same. :-)

Posted by: dagny at December 17, 2003 06:50 PMI notice that Ann Arbor is listed as a liberal-friendly city. What does it say about me that I like both Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids? My mother grew up south of Ann Arbor, and I've always liked the place.
Posted by: David T. Koyzis at December 21, 2003 03:01 PMThere are quite a few places that can do with an extra helping of embedded calvinism.
